It all started when…
As he approached the end of his Chinook flying career towards the end of 2020, Flt Lt Stu Kynaston approached us to ask if we would consider sculpting a design on a section of a ‘life-expired’ rotor blade, once flown on a CH-47 aircraft. With the blade earmarked for disposal by the RAF, our team set to work on a design that could be achieved in the time available.
A blade section was cut over the course of several hours. A tough job due to its titanium leading edge! With the design work then compete we asked ‘Kyno’ if he would like to review it before committing. He showed a remarkable level of trust and wanted to be surprised so we turned to our paint specialists to begin the application process, which in itself took many hours of painstaking work.
The design incorporated not only the union flag as a backdrop but also the outline of the mighty CH-47 and the names of the many operations and exercises that Kyno had flown on over the course of his front line rotary wing career.
We were only too pleased to see the smile on his face as he returned from his final sortie (pictured above) to be presented it in the Squadron’s hangar…albeit at a distance due to the nature of 2020…!
