RAF IX(B) SQUADRON OP CATECHISM
RAF IX(B) SQUADRON OP CATECHISM
Join us in marking an event which was a defining moment in history. This limited-edition anniversary patch honours the legendary bravery and professionalism displayed during Operation Catechism, specifically the contribution of the RAF’s IX Squadron on 12th November 1944.
Eighty years ago, the courageous airmen of the RAF launched a daring and decisive attack that sealed the fate of the German battleship Tirpitz, a monumental victory that reverberated through the final chapters of World War II.
At the heart of this design is the iconic nose of a Lancaster Bomber. Beneath it, a Tallboy bomb is depicted descending from the aircraft toward the Norwegian Fjords, emblazoned with the squadron’s motto. Reflected in the bomb aimer's window is the landscape ahead, showing the Lancaster on its approach to the target. Leading the formation and braving a barrage of flak, this aircraft prepares to release its payload on the German battleship Tirpitz below.
Escorting the Lancaster is a modern Typhoon fighter, flying in formation to watch over the historic bomber on its mission. Equipped with cutting-edge 2024 weapons technology—including Meteor missiles, ASRAAM, Paveway bombs, and Brimstone missiles—the Typhoon contrasts with the Lancaster, which carries the formidable weaponry of 1944.
In the background, the Roman numerals IX (9) appear boldly in the squadron's traditional green and yellow. A border frames the design, inscribed with the squadron name, mission details, and a graphic symbolizing the Tirpitz split by a descending Tallboy bomb. This emblem captures both the legacy and evolution of the squadron’s remarkable history.
